Engineering Plastics

POM, PEEK, PTFE, nylon, acrylic and polycarbonate for insulating, low-friction, lightweight and RF-transparent parts.

Machined plastics cover applications metals cannot: electrical insulation, RF transparency, chemical resistance, low friction, and parts that need to be light or transparent.

Material quick guide

Need Material
General machined parts, good wear POM (Delrin)
High temperature and strength PEEK
Chemical resistance and low friction PTFE
Toughness and impact resistance Nylon (PA), polycarbonate
Optical clarity Acrylic (PMMA)
Medical and high-temperature sterilisation PEEK, PEI (Ultem)

Machining plastics well

Plastics cut easily but are unforgiving about heat and clamping: too much friction melts the surface, too much clamping pressure marks or cracks it. Tooling is kept sharp with high rake angles, coolant or air clears chips, and fixtures are designed to support the part rather than squeeze it.

Where a plastic part has tight tolerances, we consider moisture absorption and thermal expansion — measurement temperature matters as much as the machine does.

FAQ

Engineering Plastics — frequently asked questions

Will machined plastic parts move after machining?

Plastics relieve internal stress when material is removed, which can make a part bow or change size afterwards. We manage it with the right stock condition, symmetric material removal and, for tight parts, a stress-relief step before finishing.

Which plastic should I use for a wear surface?

POM is the general choice for sliding and wear parts; PEEK is used where temperature and strength demands are higher, and PTFE where the lowest friction and best chemical resistance are needed.

Can you machine transparent parts?

Yes. Acrylic and polycarbonate can be machined to a clear finish with careful tooling and feeds, and acrylic can be vapour polished for optical clarity. Tell us the optical requirement so we can plan the finishing step.
